I really appreciate this post and those that followed. When I took my test drive, I found that wing to be very irritating and turned me off enough to look more at other cars. Now that I have indeed purchased, I have been wondering what was inside and if it could be modified. I am pretty good with these type of projects, just will begrudge the time it will take. My thoughts are that if both sides were modified the same way, and then covered with material that matches that of the storage bin/elbow rest, it would may look much better than that fake wood grain plastic, and unnoticeable to anyone but a Clarity owner. I have not taken delivery yet, so not sure if that material is leather or vinyl, I am thinking Leather would be easier to get a match, at least for me, there is a leather furniture / auto leather repair business close by my home. I bought a Touring model, not sure what is on that bin, hopefully it is leather as used on the seats.
If you were to remove the right side of the wing as I did on the left, you would loose the second attachment bolt. There is a bolt under each heated seat switch. The console remains solid with one side removed. With both removed, that would not be the case.
Paul, thank you for that tip. I sort of see how you finished it off, would like to know how Areosmith finish of the side of his, maybe carbon fiber based on the look of his customized steering wheel! Before I jump into this project, does anyone know how this would affect the warranty?
Should not effect warranty. Here is another view. What looks like gray in the camera flash is much closer to black in the car. It is self adhesive pipe insulation foam. It is quit comfortable to rest your knee against.
Looks comfortable! thanks for posting those pictures. Just brought home the Clarity from the dealer about 15 minutes ago. I could not drive because of surgery (bought the Clarity last Wednesday, Surgery on Friday) on a tendon in my right foot, so my wife was driving. She had not seen or driven the car yet, said she loves the seat and her right knee does not touch the wing, so that is good. If she felt what I felt on the test drive, it would have been the end of life as I knew it !!! That wing is really useless!!!
For those who don't have knee clearance issues, I ended up using the wing to hold my phone, using one of those sticky mats that works a lot better than I thought it would. It's really nice to be able to stick my phone there and plug in the USB-C cable with one hand.
I really appreciate this thread with those instructions. On our test drive I immediately hit my knee (very painfully) into the wing (I'm 5'10-5'11"ish). I was even aware of complaints of hitting it before I sat down. It's a horrid design IMO. A 3d-printed fix would be pretty neat.
I know this an old post. but these are what I'm buying. I think they will hold the cord better. Ace Hardware has an excellent price on these. 3M Command Small Plastic Cord Clips 3/4 in. L 8 pk 17302CLRES
How did you get rid of the wing? Used a How did you cut the wings out? Did you use a circular saw and did you need to take out the center console out first and reinstall it? I guess there are no critical elements in the areas that were cut out? Thanks again!
I love seeing the mods. I’ve dreamed of ripping the whole thing out and replacing the buttons with a dial/knob sitting under the HVAC controls. Considering the effort it’ll likely remain a dream. Seems like a bolt in mod would be marketable considering the abundance of dislike and pointless nature of the wings.
I know this post was too much time back ago but if you are still around, can you share where did you get the pictured items?, the steering wheel looks great (pretty much for the leg clerance) and the plastic around the screen, did you get in Amazon. I tried to find something that may fit the screen like this one.
NVM. I just found it. Here is the link just in case if someone is interested. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2255800959747732.html?gatewayAdapt=4itemAdapt
