EV Range highs and lows

    What’s the high water mark for range now?

    Well I got 539kms in Victoria
     
  4. I think some folks in other countries (NZ?) have reported mid to high 500s.

  5. Our cars arrived in time for the southern hemisphere summer in 2018. Most owner's GoMs were over 500, the highest 602, mine 500-525. Now that it's more like 8-15°C I'm getting around 470.
    None of these numbers are realistic of course.

  6. Not being realistic I think is highly dependent I’d say you just drove down a mountain and so of course are going to see an inaccurate GOM but if you’re doing stop and go traffic and normal driving and continue then the GOM, impressive or not, can be very realistic.

    The highest I have seen on my vehicle is 520km. I have only charged to 100% three times. The last one was showing 475 after a long trip with extra weight and 32 degree Celsius outside temperature.

  9. How was the drive back to Van? The Helmer summit to merritt and esp coq summit to hope allow for some serious regen!
     
  10. I'm sure interested in ACTUAL milage/kms driven by those nuts enough to push the edge of driving to almost zero charge. GOM numbers sound nice but aren't accurate for those reasons already explained/debated in past posts. Has anyone (aside from Bjorg) actually driven over 500km on a charge?

    I’m curious what sort of km regeneration people are getting dropping off the Coquihalla Summit either down into Merritt or the other way toward the Fraser River Valley. I imagine it’s significant. Will track myself when I head down to Vancouver next month.

    Ive driven. 410km and when i got home,GOM said i had 35km left.

    It was a smooth sailing. Did generate a few kms coming down the summit. We stopped at hope for a quick charge.

  15. So today we did a 300 mile round-trip drive. After I charged it over night to 100% it showed 350 miles on the gom. And even 320 with AC on.

    However, after hitting the hwy it dropped down pretty fast to about 250.

    After half of the drive (150 miles) it indicated 90 miles left and about 40% SOC. After 60 miles into the return trip we stopped at a brand new electrify America quick charger (150kw) and charged for 21 minutes at 71kw! Got it up to 48% and 110 miles on the gom.

    Arrived back in Vegas after the remaining 88 miles with 30 miles on the gom. Sorry, don't know the SOC.

    We had the AC blowing all the time since we had 2 dogs with us. And 3 adults total. Going mostly 70 on the hwy.

    I am wondering if the software update did something to the gom since it dropped like crazy on the first few miles on the hwy.

  16. What software update? Surely you don't mean the map version update.

    I would say the highway driving combined with ac and high outdoor temperature played a huge part in the significant reduction.

  18. Well, the map software update definitely updated more as you can see on the screen shots. Basically all version numbers in the settings screen are higher. Not sure what exactly everything represents.

  19. I have noticed that with the last few charges, my GOM range has gone down. Recently I have done more hwy, higher speeds, and mountain driving, and that has pulled down my avg efficiency at bit (to around 14kWh/100 kms vs 12kWh/100kms). So am not sure how exactly GOM is calculated, but am guessing that my recent lower efficiency is affecting it. Before I was doing mostly city driving.

    And I hope that a few DC fast charges (only to 80% though) have not degraded my battery in some way. Maybe I need to do a 100% charge (on level 2) to equalize all the cells. I have not done that yet, since I got the car on May 1, and now about 3500 kms.

  20. It sounds like it's calculating in the hwy miles. Mine is doing that to since we did a 300 mile to last weekend. Don't worry about degradation. Doesn't sound like you're using it in a manner that would be too bad for it.

  21. The BMS would benefit if a 100% L2 is done from a lower SOC to provide better accuracy ( if driving conditions recently changed), but I wouldn't worry about equalizing the cells as that should be occurring at any SOC.
    I feel confident that your consumption numbers will level out given a few city km's, BTW 140 Wh/km is really good efficiency in mountains.
    If you feel more comfortable with charging to 100%, I don't see any harm, provided you don't leave the pack sitting at a high SOC for very long.
    I too have not charged to full since picking up at the lot in Feb, not really concerned about it.

  22. People really need to relax on worrying about battery degradation. Even if the batteries degraded at the high end of the scale were talking 1000 cycles degrading the batteries to 75-80% of their original charge. In a Kona with a 64 kWh battery and a daily average of 50km we’re talking 25 YEARS to that point. It’s seriously a moot point and an old Nissan Leaf is a terrible comparison that’s also a perfect example of degradation. With their 23 & 3”kWh batteries a cycle is completed 3x faster then a Kona and they have demonstrated a 10 year life cycle to 80-90% original capacity, and that’s WITHOUT any battery thermal management systems that are causing premature degradation in extreme environments. With the Konas active battery management your excessive or “hard” usage of the cars batteries is pennies in the bucket of usage and the anxiety over it will likely kill you long before the rapid chargers and charging rates will kill the battery. Don’t recall anyone being this obsessed with protecting the fuel pump in their ice cars... and the fuel pumps survived the abuse they take.
     
  23. Yeah, didn't mean to come through as over reacting. I am sure there is no battery degradation. But after noticing the change in my GOM range, was just thinking of all the possibilities. It would help to know more about how the GOM is calculated,... what avg, and time frames are used, etc.

    Back to city driving the next few days, so will be interesting to see how it changes again.
